THE STORY BEHIND SAOIRSE
SAOIRSE (pronounced SEER-sha) is the Irish word for freedom: the freedom to pursue your goals, push your limits, and prepare to perform at your best.
I grew up on Inis Mór in Ireland’s Aran Islands, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the seaweed that washes up on its shores. Through nine seasons of professional rugby, I never wanted to simply be a professional athlete. I wanted to be the best I could be, and preparation was a big part of that.
SAOIRSE brings those two worlds together: Ascophyllum nodosum, the North Atlantic seaweed I grew up around, in a warming cream made for your pre-training routine. Every batch is made by hand in small quantities, with the same care I put into preparing for every match.
Rooted in the Atlantic. Made for movement.
Why seaweed? What does it actually do?
Ascophyllum nodosum is a brown seaweed that naturally contains polysaccharides like fucoidan and laminarin, plus minerals and antioxidant compounds. In a cream, those help condition and hydrate the skin. It’s the heart of the formula.
How is this different from Tiger Balm or Icy Hot?
Those are pain-relief products. SAOIRSE is a cosmetic warming cream built around seaweed. It’s made with Ascophyllum nodosum extract and shea and mango butter, so it feels like a proper skin cream, not a sticky balm, and it’s non-greasy. It’s made by hand in small batches.
How strong is the warming, and how long does it last?
Warming sensation typically builds within minutes and lasts around 30 minutes, depending on the amount applied and your skin.
Can I use it after a workout too?
Absolutely. SAOIRSE is designed for before training, as part of your warm-up. You can use it after too if you like the feel, but the warming is really built for getting ready to move.
Is it OK for sensitive skin? What’s in it?
The main ingredients are seaweed extract, shea and mango butter, and camphor and vanillyl butyl ether for the warming. The full ingredient list is on the jar and the website. Since it has camphor, I’d patch test a small area first if you have sensitive skin. Keep it away from your eyes and broken skin, and wash your hands after applying.
